A simple test of whether adopting a technology is worth it is this:
Does it add another recurring technological cost to my life?
A television requires some kind of connection to channels, feeds, streamers. How many subscriptions will be enough? What boundaries and limitations will you be able to set for yourself when a world of entertainment is at your fingertips?
By contrast, an espresso machine invites a different kind of recurring purchase. Beans and consistent, fixed perishables like syrups or milk constitute a home-coffee addict's spending habits. The machine itself doesn't suggest to you or require a single recurring purchase outside what can be bought and applied to any simpler caffeine-making tool. Certainly, the world of upgrades and artistic additions is endless.
The foundational purchasing needs remain unchanged, uncoerced.
